The Games Maker Choir Review of 2017; Part 2

Enjoy Part 2 of our review of another incredible year for the ‘Go To’ Choir for Sport!

Read on for more exciting memories of a packed 2017……..

Recording – at the home of National Records

CWP recording Kew Gardens montage

In September we headed off to another very special venue, The National Archives at Kew to sing “One Day Like This” again, but this time in a new arrangement as our track on the album “Stand Together” by “Choirs With Purpose”

It’s been so interesting to be involved in this Christmas Chart charity album (released on the 15th December) a project raising funds for a range of amazing charities, as an antidote to some of the unfortunate incidents which occurred in 2017.

As the ‘Go To Choir for Sport’ The Games Maker Choir’s nominated charity is Access Sport which does incredible work helping disadvantaged children through sport.

Download or buy your own copy of the album and help this great charity, along with many others.

To complement and included on the album, the project also created a fabulous single “We All Stand Together” featuring Michelle McManus, a harmonious re-working of Sir Paul McCartney’s famous 1983 hit Read more here

Singing High and Swinging Low at Twickenham

Twickenham Double Head tweet 02.09.17

In September the choir was privileged to sing lineside at the Double Header event with the Aviva Premiership’s biggest clubs playing to a huge crowd watching reigning European Champions, Saracens play Northampton Saints and London Irish versus Harlequins. We sang two sets to an appreciative audience; it’s always a pleasure singing at Twickenham!

Songs of Praise and enjoying Gospel Choir of the Year

In November, members of the choir were invited to join the singing congregation at a recording of that BBCTV institution “Songs of Praise” at Methodist Central Hall, Westminster, followed by watching the recording of the Gospel Choir of the Year Competition. Stirring stuff!

Brazilian TV Feature

A Brazilian TV crew joined our November rehearsal to record a feature on the choir to be shown on their home TV network in Brazil. The piece was to be shown in their daily programme Planeta SporTV (SporTV Planet)  in which each international correspondent shows some sporting facts and news from different countries/continents. Meeting the crew inspired some great memories of Rio2016!

A Christmas Concert and a spot of Community Singing

Christmas Concert 2017

In early December, our monthly Battersea church rehearsal (yes we only rehearse together once a month!) extended into a concert for family and friends old and new. The audience were treated to traditional carols, songs from our ever growing repertoire and some ‘community singing’ including rugby union favourite Swing Low Sweet Chariot(with a twist) and a totally unique audience lesson in learning a national anthem in a native language, something this unique choir does without batting an eyelid!

We all continue to Stand Together

Choirs With Purpose Album cover, December 2017

The excitement has been growing as the Choirs with Purpose single and album were both released successfully (24th November and 15th December respectively) and the Christmas Charts results followed avidly.

This inspiring project has bought all 12 participating choirs together in many ways, from sharing posts and tweets and following each other on social media, to radio interviews, and both TV and live performances. The project, masterminded by Jim Hawkins and Clare Cook continues to bring together those who love the joy of singing while supporting a whole range of amazing causes.

The album is not just for Christmas!

Hopefully those who have purchased or received the album and single as gifts will continue to enjoy the results each time they listen to “Stand Together”.

A SouthBank Concert and a mini Flashmob

Just as we thought we had finished for the year, in December the choir was invited to sing at the Riverside Terrace Café at the Southbank Centre, London. This concert was a joyous opportunity to sing to a new audience, in a very festive setting alongside the River Thames. The evening included other choirs too and it was a very special experience, along with members of the Missing People Choir leading them, and the audience, in a very moving performance of “We All Stand Together”

And finally ……..We’re throwing our curtains even wider!

To paraphrase the choir’s signature song, Elbow’s “One Day Like This”, the decision was made this year to open the criteria to join this unique choir to more singers, to include those who have volunteered at a wider range of large sporting events. See the list here. So if you love to sing, and fancy the opportunity to join us in more experiences such as those described here, get in touch soon.

Why not join one of our rehearsals to see just how much fun it is to be part of the Games Maker Choir family.

If you missed Part 1 of our Review of 2017 catch up here.

The whole Games Maker Choir team join in wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and peaceful, sporty and musical 2018!
